I think it’s clear that something is wrong. Audiences are rejecting subpar material in a way that we haven’t seen in a long time. Sadly, they are also still rejecting quality under-the-radar material as well.
The fact is that everyone is in play it safe mode. Studios are holding back on marketing spending because they don’t know where — be it online, TV, or print — they will get any real results. They can also see that audiences are being fickle, a fact that has made them very conservative. Which is the reason you are seeing a lot of “dependable” brands being put into play (remakes, sequels, etc).
Regular people just aren’t being given a good reason to leave their houses and go to the movies.
